If I were to watch a movie that I actually enjoy (ie: a somewhat deep movie with an interesting and complex storyline) I am sure that I'd need subtitles. I even needed subtitles for Waterboys, and that was a comedy. I went to see Rakugo and I wished it was subtitled because I only understood the gag-style jokes and two out of the ten stories.

Rookies, however, is like D2 The Mighty Ducks (minus the romance between Coach Bombay and that lady who I think may have been Charlie's mom, if I remember it properly.) and that means that you have to be a moron not to understand it if you're living in Japan and speak Japanese... even imperfect Japanese.

I am almost absolutely sure that your mom would have no questions to ask you after watching D2 the mighty ducks. It's pretty straightforward. I also understood Ponyo with no subtitles.

Slowly working my way up.

By "100% understand" I mean that I had no questions about the movie (Who is that guy? Why did he cry? Why did they do that flashback? What are the laughing about?) and that I laughed when the rest of the people in the theatre laughed. I didn't cry, though. I didn't enjoy it that much.

When you say you 100% understood are you being serious or exaggerating? Because my mom is Japanese and has lived in America for like 20 years and it's still hard for her to understand American movies because of idioms especially in comedies. I wonder how I can help her understand better but it's hard teaching stuff like that to people.
