yeah, they have beautiful mahjong sets in Japan, too, but the Japanese ones don't have roman number on them. I can play it just fine because I can read the kanji, but I want to teach my family to play it sometime and for that I'll need one with roman numbers like they have in HK.

I can't help you with that. Sorry! I know other bloggers that have written about host clubs, though, namely green eyed geisha. Her blog is so good and she's a much better writer than I am. She's been to host clubs and has written up reviews. They're really funny. Search for her blog on my link　list.

I went to China a couple of years ago- I actually liked Beijing and Xian more than Shanghai (from a cultural/touristy point of view anyway) but I wrote about SHanghai here - http://www.cherryblossomadventures.com/2007/08/28/china-part-three-shanghai/ - I enjoyed the Yu Garden and the Jade Buddha temple. I was only there a few days so don`t really have much other advice. Tell your cousin to go to Xian when he gets a chance though- the terracotta warriors were amazing!

Oh and I noticed on your wish list that you want a beautiful mahjong set. I bought one for my husband when I was in China and it is lovely- so perhaps you could get your cousin to look into one for you?

I visited Shanghai in 2005 and had so much fun. We stayed over at my mom's friend's house. Luckily for us, she happened to be super wealthy so we had her driver driving us everywhere for the whole week..No taxi and language problems at all. The night markets are a good place to start esp if u'r cousin's never been to a night market...or even a daytime market..shopping in shanghai for girls is like being in mecca..u can find cute clothes for every budget type. nyway..the only thing i can recommend is maybe the Shanghaiist blog/website..It's a lifestyle blog about things happening in china including shanghai, of course...and most importantly, it's in ENglish. hope that helps!!!
