2. I hated my name for so long but wouldn't change it now for the world, although I now answer to the many versions of my name which I've acquired through travelling. It means freedom in Irish Gaelic, and was pretty unique when I was young though it's becoming more popular in Ireland these days.

Abroad, I answer to sushi, sasha, sercy, saucy (if you try to read my name it sounds like sayorsee), whatevers easiest for others - currently susha-sen :) Sometimes I change it to the native version of freedom if thats easy - liberte in France.

I have a Danish surname, and like that my name represents my two halves - my two nationalities.

2. I don't like my name and it doesn't suits me, it is in romanian and it means to " to soothe" or "to comfort"... I'm more a caustic person, I usually hurt people around, even without knowing.
It's like I'm the opposite of my name, so, I would change my name in Nona...for me it means Non-Alina, and in latin it means the ninth, in romanian it is a sickness due to oversleeping (or something like that), thing that is very common to me -I always get late to my morning school hours-.
Also in the ancient Rome, it was the ninth hour of the day and also there was a pray named Nona, which was been said in the same hour, the ninth hour of the day.
In music it is an interval between two sounds of the diatonic gamut.
And there are many other meanings of this name.. so .. mostly I will choose this one, more because of his meanings, that i think that represent my strange personality and complex structure of any humans way of thinking.
And second because I think a name must represent his owner and that changing him according the owner's type is not a disgrace to the parents.

Akio -Bright or smart- Japanese
Aki - Sky - Japanese
Adan -of the earth- Spanish
Lucas -light- Latin
Sebastian - Venerable - Latin

I did not put them by gender because I think a name should be given more be looks and the feeling that the baby leaves to there parents on there first meeting, then by the gender.

Just to let you know that if you name your child Shirabe and you don't live in Japan, his name will be forever mispronounced as rhyming with the first syllable in "table"...one syllable Shirabe is not as lovely as the Japanese pronunciation. Just a heads up!

Just wanted to let you know how helpful this was. I found you by googling Japanese names. I am weeks away from having my 3rd child, and am stuck on boys names. My husband is from Japan and always roots for the 3 syllable name that will get mutilated in the US. Our first two, are Bonji and Seiji and I love them and their names. 2. I love my first name a lot, even though it's frequently said wrong most of the time. I even have a second name which is even harder to say! (Synique) Both are totally unique in spelling and pronunciation!

I'm Tammy and over the years the name kinda "grew on me". I was named for a girl in a movie my Mom saw.
When I was little I wanted to be Jenny, or Karen, or Kami, or something common like that, but then I figured, my parents gave me my name for a reason and it's mine, so I am keeping it, besides, it's easy to pronounce in any languge.
I like solid, popular names and I really don't like exhotic or trendy type names.
My baby daughter is Emily and if she'll have a sister or brother, they will be Natalie and Shaun.

Hey Kym! Thanks for writing. I was so stoked to have this site in Venuszine, too. It's a great site and a lot of really rad people have found me through it.

I used to like the idea of giving my child a really unique, offbeat name. But now I think I'd rather give it a plain, old-fashioned name and maybe a more interesting middle name. I have always liked how my name is common enough that everyone knows how to spell it, yet not so common that it's Jessica or Ashley and everyone has that name.

Out of your names, Della is pretty. Not crazy about Xavier, though Ashby is pretty great.

For Japanese names, my favorite boy names are Naoki and anything ending in "suke" (pronounced su-kay) like Yusuke or Ryosuke. My favorite student in Tokyo was named Shirabe and that's actually a really eccentric name in Japan... it's a verb and it's not common at all. It means "research" but I think it's a great name. For girls, I like Haruka and Ayaka.

Sorry for the lateness here. I discovered this amazing blog through the link on Venuszine (my favorite). Anyways:

1. My actual name is Kymberlee, however, I go by Kym (or "The Wizard" if you knew me in high school).

2. I have always despised my name. Especially the fact that my parents thought they were being cute by giving me a cliche suburban bourgeoisie name with a "unique" spelling that I'm convinced no one will ever spell correctly. In addition, it has never been suitable for my personality, I have always feminist, vegetairian, hippie - punk, not the subversive, airheded, girl next door everyone assumes a "Kimberly" should be.

3. As inconceivable as it is, if husband and I should ever create progeny I would assume, given our lifestyle they would grow up to be more than just a litle "quirky". So, I think their names should follow suit.

Girl: Della is my absolute favorite for a female. Burgundy,Iona,Zinnia

Boy: Draelen is my favorite for a male. Ashby,Hezekiah,Xavier

I'm not too concerned with making it simple for the sake of travel because I think these names are unique enough to be remembered easily. I like my name in most cases. I love having name discussions though. When I was little I liked the name Emily and wished I had been called that instead. I hate my middle name.
