My leg hurts.

My leg is killing me. I have a severe muscle cramp or sprain of some sort that goes from the right side of my right foot all the way up to my knee. It's hard to walk.

I don't know why it happened, but I think it's because I walk a LOT in cheap shoes. My friend just told me to drink a lot of water, relax, take lots of baths and buy these little minty-smelling bandages (シップ)that old ladies use for their arthritis and backaches in Asia. Do you have any suggestions?

> それはたぶん日本語で 「足がつった」 と言う。すごく痛い。忞僕もよくなるよ。水をたくさん飲むといい! 痙攣けいれん とも言う。

Sounds like a whopper of a charley horse! Those are supposed to come from potassium lows, so, bananas?

In the German speaking world it is commonly known as a Pferdekuss (horse's kiss), while in Norway is referred to a lårhøne (thigh hen), in Sweden lårkaka (thigh cake), in the Netherlands as an ijsbeen (ice leg) and in France as béquille (crutch). In Portugal, it is known as a paralítica, roughly translated to "paralyzer". In Japan it is known as komuragaeri (こむら返り?), which is literally "cramp in the calf". In north eastern Italy it is commonly called a lopez, while in the north west it is called vecchia (old woman) or dura ("hard one" or "tough one"). In the south of the country, instead, it is called morso di ciuccio (donkey bite).

If it's a cramp then magnesium tablets help.

Álso, if you already drink a lot of water, don't increase it. I actually get cramps when I drink too much water -- it upsets the electrolyte balance in your body or something like that. I often get cramps in summer when I drink heaps of water. Having a gatorade or sports drink now and then helps.

Is this a new pain that came on quickly? Do you have any redness or swelling in that leg? If so, maybe see a doctor (soon) to rule out a blood clot.

If it's been going on for a while and you're sure it's just cramps, try increasing your potassium with bananas and potatoes.

Maybe get some better quality shoes too! Especially when u are walking long distances...I find New Balances are good. They may not be as stylish as heels, but they will make ur feet feel soooo much more comfy. Hope u feel better soon!

I get this every time I come back to Japan from the US. It's from walking a lot. Even if you don't realize it you do walk a HELL of a lot more than you would in the US. Use those medicinal-tape things your friend mentioned daily, especially before you go out, and try to wear shoes that will cover and support your foot AND your ankle. Sandals and loose-fitting shoes make it worse. You can also use foot support socks. It should go away after about a month from originally experiencing it, but will lessen gradually. Do stretches and exercises for your ankles like writing the alphabet in the air with your toes or something. Bananas are good for potassium but those are generally for muscle cramps - I know what you're talking about and this isn't the case. It has more to do with the weakness of your ankle putting pressure on your foot.
