I love China.Once again, I'm back on a China kick where I want to read as much as I can about China and learn how to cook more Chinese food.
-I made gyoza again last week using my friend's Hong Kong style recipe. I made friends with a Taiwanese girl and we've been hanging out a lot lately and going running together. I haven't been to Taiwan yet and I really want to go, but I want to go with my friend Eve more than with anyone else.
-My cousin just moved to Shanghai.
-Hong Kong has the best food in the entire world, and anyone who disagrees with that has no taste.
Factory Girls - Leslie T. ChangI'm reading this book about the girls who work in all the factories in Shenzhen and Dongguan. These are two of the main cities in China where most things like shoes, toys and electronics are made. It's really interesting, especially now that I've been to Shenzhen and can picture what it's like.
Shenzhen is pretty rough and bleak. I didn't see any green at all, really, except a single tree planted outside of a chain hotel. The book is pretty interesting. It's written by a Chinese-American woman who lived in Dongguan on and off for a few years while writing articles for the Wall Street Journal.
My cousin Andrew just moved to Shanghai.
Can you recommend any interesting things for him to do / eat there?
Can you recommend any groups he can join or English magazines / websites he can read?
Does anyone know anything about an international community there so that he can make some friends with Shanghai's people and people from all over the world?

Buy tailored suits and shirts.
I visited Shanghai in 2005 and had so much fun. We stayed over at my mom's friend's house. Luckily for us, she happened to be super wealthy so we had her driver driving us everywhere for the whole week..No taxi and language problems at all. The night markets are a good place to start esp if u'r cousin's never been to a night market...or even a daytime market..shopping in shanghai for girls is like being in mecca..u can find cute clothes for every budget type. nyway..the only thing i can recommend is maybe the Shanghaiist blog/website..It's a lifestyle blog about things happening in china including shanghai, of course...and most importantly, it's in ENglish. hope that helps!!!
Hey Julie-
I know this is off-topic (I apologize for distracting you from China!), but I'm a journalist writing a piece about the Japanese host-club industry for a U.S. women's magazine. Could you please email me at japanesehostboys (at) gmail.com? I wanted to ask you a few questions. Thank you so much in advance!
Hello he might want to try http://shanghaiist.com/
http://www.chinalyst.net/ is a collective blog site with people from all around China posting.
Hope this helps
I went to China a couple of years ago- I actually liked Beijing and Xian more than Shanghai (from a cultural/touristy point of view anyway) but I wrote about SHanghai here - http://www.cherryblossomadventures.com/2007/08/28/china-part-three-shanghai/ - I enjoyed the Yu Garden and the Jade Buddha temple. I was only there a few days so don`t really have much other advice. Tell your cousin to go to Xian when he gets a chance though- the terracotta warriors were amazing!
Oh and I noticed on your wish list that you want a beautiful mahjong set. I bought one for my husband when I was in China and it is lovely- so perhaps you could get your cousin to look into one for you?

I can't help you with that. Sorry! I know other bloggers that have written about host clubs, though, namely green eyed geisha. Her blog is so good and she's a much better writer than I am. She's been to host clubs and has written up reviews. They're really funny. Search for her blog on my link list.
yeah, they have beautiful mahjong sets in Japan, too, but the Japanese ones don't have roman number on them. I can play it just fine because I can read the kanji, but I want to teach my family to play it sometime and for that I'll need one with roman numbers like they have in HK.
Hello. I am in chinese guy in Vancouver. I went to Shanghai and Beijing many times, and I found Beijing is much fun than Shanghai.
Heya Julie,
The picture used in your post is of Hong Kong.
I guess technically HK is a part of China now.
Since you're asking for recommendations on Shanghai, you could have put up a picture of the Bund. :)
Carol
My post was about China.
Hong Kong has the best night view in China, in my opinion.
I absolutely love Hong Kong.
Hi Julie,
Have to disagree with you....
Taiwan actually has the best food in the entire world. You should go visit someday :)
