I went and saw Rookies last week. It made me happy because I can add it to the growing list of Japanese movies I've seen without subtitles and 100% completely understood. Unfortunately, though, anyone who doesn't understand this movie can't be a very intelligent person.
Basically
D2 The Mighty Ducks
-
hockey and English
+
baseball and Japanese
-
a romantic interest for the Coach Bombay character
+
about 40 minutes of crying and crying and crying
=
Rookies
I loved D2 when I was a little kid. I loved that movie so much. I'm not little anymore, though, and I don't know anything about baseball and I didn't love Rookies. When it got too boring, I tried to concentrate on Yusuke Yamamoto, AKA the guy who played the talented slacker AKA only somewhat attractive actor in the movie. When I was a kid, I loved the D2 character "Charlie".
Whoever the stylist for Rookies is should get some sort of horrible award for succeeding in making 佐藤健 Takeru Sato unattractive for this movie. That was truly sad. I didn't even recognize him until 5 minutes before the very end. Takeru Sato was turned into this. Remarkable.
You might get dragged to this movie, too. Everyone is talking about it and the poster is up all over the country.

Rookies: playing baseball and crying their eyes out

When you say you 100% understood are you being serious or exaggerating? Because my mom is Japanese and has lived in America for like 20 years and it's still hard for her to understand American movies because of idioms especially in comedies. I wonder how I can help her understand better but it's hard teaching stuff like that to people.
Wow, good for you! Japanese is not an easy language. Thanks for sharing. This site might interest some of your friends.
i LOVE sato ryuta!!! he is hysterical.
Did you watch the TV series?
If I were to watch a movie that I actually enjoy (ie: a somewhat deep movie with an interesting and complex storyline) I am sure that I'd need subtitles. I even needed subtitles for Waterboys, and that was a comedy. I went to see Rakugo and I wished it was subtitled because I only understood the gag-style jokes and two out of the ten stories.
Rookies, however, is like D2 The Mighty Ducks (minus the romance between Coach Bombay and that lady who I think may have been Charlie's mom, if I remember it properly.) and that means that you have to be a moron not to understand it if you're living in Japan and speak Japanese... even imperfect Japanese.
I am almost absolutely sure that your mom would have no questions to ask you after watching D2 the mighty ducks. It's pretty straightforward. I also understood Ponyo with no subtitles.
Slowly working my way up.
By "100% understand" I mean that I had no questions about the movie (Who is that guy? Why did he cry? Why did they do that flashback? What are the laughing about?) and that I laughed when the rest of the people in the theatre laughed. I didn't cry, though. I didn't enjoy it that much.
Hysterical? Ahhh, I am so bad. I don't even notice his characters or his acting. Ha. He has nice eyes, though.
I think I just love him because I see a lot of him on variety shows and he's always so endearing!
I have a question- a vegetarian friend is coming from the UK and she's going to be in Tokyo / kansai for a bit. Can you recommend any places to eat veggie food?
ah! this was on tv here (nyc) and although i speak no japanese, i watched it because it was so over the top and even i understood what was going on, haha.
It's not out in any country but Japan yet. Maybe you saw the TV show with the same name? I haven't seen it.
I'm looking forward to watching it on the small screen! if only to compare it with mighty ducks! LOL! and yes I agree with you on the stylist comment, when I saw the promo pics, I was like who's that? with a hairy octopus sucking on his brain? funny, most girls would go for shirota yu I think.Yusuke Yamamoto is too pretty for me.
