You will not believe what happened yesterday. I had a very wealthy friend who lived near Omotesando in Tokyo. We drifted apart, but last month, I got an email from her dad. (She lives with her parents) Her father is a really good artist and a nice person. When I'd visit her, I'd always talk to him because his English was really good and at the time, I did not speak much Japanese. In total, I met him about 4 times. I recommended the movie "Harold and Maude" to him because I recommend it to absolutely everyone, all the time.
So the email said "Hello Julie, Hisashiburidesune. I am writing to say that I looked at Harold and Maude this afternoon and maybe it changed my life. Hiroko loves it, also. I can see now why you decided to start playing the banjo. It is a very nice film. I hope it does not bother you that I wrote to you. Maiko taught me your email address. I want to say thank you for an excellent recommendation. I also have a little something to send you in the mail. Please teach me your mailing address and I will send shortly."So yesterday in the mail, I got a beautiful, black See By Chloe t-shirt with a little card from him and his wife.
Wow. I think I may have the best life in the world.

I'm so charmed by this that I want to find Harold and Maude straight away. I love it when people sincerely enjoy your recommendations, because that makes it more fun to keep finding new media to indulge in so that you can share it. :) The only downside is when someone wants to completely own the recommendations they make, ha ha.
Luckily, I haven't met many people like that since high school. I know the type, though.
-Harold and Maude changed the way I behave in my life (to a certain extent, you can make your life into what you want it to be, and you can change your life completely in a moment).
-Serge Gainsbourg's music also had an incredible influence on me in ways that you can maybe imagine.
-Reading Gabriel Garcia Marquez when I was a teenager really made me see life in terms of timelines (this has defined my life).
Ohhh, there have been so many things. I like to open myself up to media (music, film, literature, etc) and allow things to change me. People too, although this is rarer. My family, Ryan, Asli, Aisha, three people I felt "in love" with (but wasn't) and didn't date, my grandparents, one university teacher, one great-aunt and two grandparents, and three other friends have had a huge, HUGE influences on me.
I saw the shirt in a department store...
11500 yen!!! For a T SHIRT!!!
(That's around 130 CND dollars)
I'd better wear this thing a LOT!!! But I will. See by Chloe is my favorite and this is the first thing I've owned by it.
If anyone wants to buy me Marc Jacobs Daisy perfume... I'll recommend 13984719281 great books and movie to you.
That is so nice! Now I have to see this movie!
I've never kept close track of what films and books have helped shaped today-me, it would be a good exercise to sit and write down what's stuck with me, and then continue to journal what I find meaningful, in terms of media.
I've been wanting to read 100 Years of Solitude, but keep putting it off until I've made an effort to pick up Spanish again, so I could try to read an untranslated version. Ha ha, I think I'll have to admit to myself that I'm lazy and should just jump in with Spanish and English copies side-by-side.
Sorry, if I got my hands on Daisy, I'd be greedy!
Remember when I loaned you "Youth" by Coetzee and you were scared that I admired the lead character?
The preceding book (Boyhood) is somehow even more of an unhappy experience. Although, as I recall, I think that was the one author I really love that you never quite took to.
that's really sweet :D
i have yet to watch harold & maude myself. this was a good reminder!
