Jehovah's Witnesses in Japan

There are tons of them here in Japan, though I haven't met any yet. Jehovah's Witnesses in Japan tend to target foreign people. Every foreign person (co-workers, etc) I have met in Japan has had a lot of experience with these people coming to the door. I don't live in my own house (my name is not on the lease at all) so they have never found me at home. If someone speaks English to me on the road, I walk past them, so Jehovah's Witnesses have never bothered me.

My Chinese-Canadian friend was teaching English in Osaka and they'd come to his apartment all the time. They are really good at English and other languages. My friend has two names (a Chinese one and an English one) so they read the Chinese name and started off at his door in Chinese but then switched to English when they found his English to be better than his Chinese. They used to leave notes and copies of the Watchtower in his mailbox.

(The picture is something my friend found on flickr and mailed to me. It shows how much thoughtful detail and care Jehovah's Witnesses put into their recruitment.)

This isn't really a post about anything. Just that Jehovah's Witnesses exist in Japan.

The thing I found very shocking when I lived in Japan were the amount of Korean and Taiwanese Christians I met. I didn't meet any J.W.'s either but I did see some mormons riding around on bikes.

For those in Tokyo, look out for the Jehovah Witness guy who's in Yoyogi Park every Sunday, come rain or shine, who has an answer for everything! I have met them,(Jehovahs, that is), many times, even in the complete inaka when I was walking with my three year old son! They're even in rice fields! Be lucky they haven't found you yet...

I've had a lot of J-Ws come to my door. They're very persistent. The ones I've met seem to light up when they see a white foreigner, assuming perhaps that they'll be Christian. I try to quash that assumption pretty quickly.

They came to my door just today! I had to stop answering the door on sundays because they have been coming more often (I dont know how not be nice to them) but today my son was making noise so I had to. They seem nice but I am really not interested and I thought I made that clear. Don't know what to do, it can be pretty annoying. They read the bible to me while I am wearing a tank top and it's freezing outside.

The last thing to do is let them into your home: once in, they are like a plague. started syudying with them to fill in time as a housewife 4 the last 6yrs; still they never get the message that i´m not interested in being a member of JW.Kindly told the nice lady that am not interested in studying anymore and invented a ficticious job that takes up all my time, added to taking care of my 2 kids and hubby afterwards.

I live in a fairly rural area in Gifu City, Gifu Prefecture, and I get JWs coming to the door about twice a year. They're very annoying and if you are polite they won't leave. They were here again last Sunday.

My grandmother, 2 aunties, 2 uncles, and 4 cousins who all live in Kansai are Jehovas..my cousin who is a boy and who has just graduated from high school is extremely intelligent and could have easily gone to a top japanese university but his parents insisted that he had to serve Jehova instead of persuing knowledge and the prospect of financial security. He works at mcdonalds, part time because he has to do his door to door duties daily. very sad.
