香港I Love Hong Kong 香港

I went to Hong Kong to visit my friends on my break! Hong Kong could be my favorite place in the world. It reminds me of Osaka and Istanbul mixed. I was surprised to find that I could read the kanji for Hong Kong: 香港. They use those kanji in Japanese, too. The is from my friend Kaori's name. It is a pleasant meaning for "scent" or "smell" The means "harbour" or "bay". So together, Hong Kong means something like, "pleasantly scented harbour" which is sort of ironic and funny. Go down to the harbour in Hong Kong and tell me if it's pleasant.
They should rename Hong Kong 美味 饎 国. (I don't write in Chinese) Hong Kong food is the best in the world. I know I say that about every place I visit, but that's because I really can't /don't eat a whole lot in mainland Japan and so when I travel, I get to excited about delicious food. Congee breakfasts are amazing. The huge selection of vegetable s and fruit is amazing. The variety available in a single restaurant is amazing. You could eat every day for two months in Hong Kong and not only never eat at the same restaurant, but also never eat the same dish twice. And I'm vegetarian. Imagine how much more variety and selection would be available if I ate meat. There's a great vegetarian restaurant in Jordan, by the way.Salted quail eggs from the night market in Yau Ma Tei in Kowloon.
I was trying so hard not to have a sad or disgusted look on my face that I actually made a face that looked excited and stoked. Keep in mind that I wasn't. But this is a cow's tail. Durian is maybe my favorite fruit. I hardly ever get to eat it because it's a tropical fruit and only stays in season for a while. It's spiky and as big as three people's heads. That's why I hardly ever get to try it. I am one of the only people I know who loves it, and I can't eat an entire durian alone. It smells and tastes like French cheese to me. It has a texture of Brie or Camembert and a lot of people think fruit shouldn't taste and feel like that. My friends say it smells like cat pee but I love it.
My friend tries to shove an entire red bean cake into his mouth at once. This greedy picture made us laugh for ages.

I love markets!
Kira, I already know what you're going to say about these dolls. Ha.
Best neon sign.
Central Hong Kong at night becomes a street party filled with wealthy-looking foreign people.
If any of you guys have lived in both Hong Kong and Tokyo, I'd be really interested to hear what you think about the foreign community. For me, it was a total culture shock walking through the rich, downtown party street in Central and seeing almost all foreign people but having it feel the exact opposite of Roppongi. Almost everyone in HK speaks a lot of English, too. I want to know what other people think about it, but I think that the impact of colonialism is what the difference is.

My favorite place in HK is Tsim Sha Tsui. I stayed at the Chungking Mansions, the place where Wong Kar Wai's Chungking Express was filmed. It was a little bit scary but surprisingly clean and obviously cheap. It felt like the whole world was living inside that place and everyone wanted something from you. I talked to some ladies from India and Ghana. There were British people and Afghani people and mainland Chinese people. It looked and smelled like Tanzania and it made me nostalgic. Hong Kong's multiculturalism made me feel like Japan is really missing something. What do you think?

...I love how you only know me in internet world, yet you know me so well. I am indeed creeped out by the mountains of dolls that are STARING INTO MY SOUL.

But I love congee! One of my friends is Vietnamese, and whenever I get sick she makes me congee. And it's always different, which is nice. I'm glad you liked Hong Kong. My grandmother (world traveler) said Hong Kong was her favourite place in the world. I hope I get to go one day, too. But you've been to Istanbul?! I'm jealous. That's my top wish-list destination for visiting. Was it awesome? Did you visit the underground cities and cistern and some mosques / churches / synagogues?

That food looks wonderful! It would be great if you did a "eating vegetarian" in Hong Kong post. I'm a vegetarian too and I'd like to know what to get when I do end up going there :)

it's very rare that a western likes durian.. i watched this food program where there's a guy who eats all sort of weird food (including insects and maggots) but cant stand the smell of durian!! how strange.. it's the nicest fruit smell..

Wow! How is Durian unhealthy? I didn't know that. How do you mean unhealthy?

I love Chunking Express, I'm so jealous!

Though I have no idea what a durian is firsthand, the description and photo of it sounds like it's a very fatty fruit, which is probably why some would say it is unhealthy. I suppose, if that were true that it'd be unhealthy in the same way that avacados are unhealthy.

But even fruits like apples can be unhealthy if eaten too much. Sugary fruits in excess end up like all excess fruit that is ingested - converted into fat.

Andrew Zimmern is the guy who eats things like bugs but gagged when he smelled the durian. Anthony Bourdain, on the other hand, enjoyed his durian. I would eat a durian with him any day. MMMHMMM.

How long is the flight from (Tokyo? Osaka? wherever you departed from) to Hong Kong? One of my coworkers went a few months ago. She brought me back the most beautiful silk scarf!

I want to go to Hong Kong so badly! A friend of mine just came back from HK and described it as being similar to NYC, but even better. This post makes me want to go even more.

Also, Chungking Express is an excellent movie. I love Wong Kar Wai.

I heard that there's this show called Fear Factor where people have to do scary or gross things. I heard that some people were "dared" to eat Pi Dahn (they called it "Thousand Year Old Egg" in English) and that everyone was gagging.

SO ANNOYING!
Don't WASTE it!! Give it to me! I love pi dahn. It's the best thing ever.

Weird. You're right. Durian has 147 calories and 5.3 grams of fat per 100 grams.

Well, it's totally delicious.

Durian over cake any day!!

Julie-
Did you ever buy durian in Canada? I would like to try it but I've never seen it at any grocery store. Is it even sold in Western countries? Excuse my durian ignorance, haha.

Also, did you ever try the purple potato in Okinawa? It was one of my fav. Okinawan foods!

Hey, just passing by.. Hong Kong is definitely a place with a diversity of cultures. Even though my family and I immigrated to New Zealand when I was three years old but I would most certainly consider Hong Kong one of the most lovely places to live in the world. Transport and food is extremely convenient in contrast to New Zealand.. In fact, Hong Kong is much safer than New Zealand because the polices patrol around areas more often unlike New Zealand where I never seen a glimpse of polices patrolling unless if there is car accidents or robbery. It's definitely a good place to teach English because Hong Kong students has a stronger english foundation than countries such as korea and japan. I live in discovery bay in hong kong when I go back during my school breaks, Discovery Bay is one of the best places for foreigners to live in Hong Kong because Discovery Bay has alot of caucasians coming from places such as USA,UK,Australia and New Zealand. It's also a really friendly community as well :) Anyways, if you are just looking for a vacation thn I would suggest you to go to Ocean Park because Hong Kong disneyland is terrible (as much as I love Hong Kong, I must say it's TERRIBLE :( ), Victoria's peak, LanKwaiFong(clubbing and events :) )
That's about it ... Enjoy your next visit to Hong Kong :)
Kk :)
