Fela in the Changeroom

Sometimes Japan has such good taste in music that it's disconcerting. Yesterday, I was trying on a dress and in the changeroom section of Beams, they were playing Fela Kuti. It was almost sacrilegious. I find that people in Japan either have the best taste ever and you're shocked by who they tell you they listen to, or they listen to Jpop exclusively. I rarely find a middle ground person.

In other news, My Loving Tokyo Wife is in this Danish tourism video. She's the girl who puts the book on the shelf at the 30 second mark.

Hi Julie,

Love your blog! I've been reading it for a while now. As a former English teacher in Tokyo, your stories and adventures remind me of my time there...I do miss it so!

I agree about the Japanese's taste in music. Most of my students were into jpop and a few American artists. I will admit to cringing whenever someone said they liked rock and then proceeded to cite Avril Lavigne as their favorite rocker. Yikes. But the ones who had really eclectic taste would always name great bands and old school artists. No middle ground.

You seem to know a lot about Japanese music. Any recommendations..?! Even non-Japanese music recs would be appreciated. What's on your top 10 playlist? I'm always open to new beats...

Thanks, and great work on the blog! I can continue to live in Japan vicariously through you:)

Unfortunately, when I was in Japan this past summer they seemed to be experiencing a lapse in musical taste. I could not escape that terrible song by Coldplay, "When I Ruled the World" or whatever it's called. It was in train stations, restaurants, clothing shops... I couldn't avoid it!
