Japanese Language School in Tokyo

I want to learn Japanese with a real teacher. Today I had an interview at this place near iidabashi that I found in Tokyo Metropolis (an English language magazine about Tokyo that has a great classified section similar to Craigslist) and tomorrow I'll get a trial lesson there, but it would be even better to go to a place recommended by someone who can tell me if the school really helped them.

What are some good Japanese language schools? Have you been to any really bad ones? Do you think a "conversation partner" is a waste of time, or is it helpful? What's some advice for learning Japanese, especially at a conversational level? I can read Hiragana and Katakana but only one Kanji (yama!) and my spoken Japanese doesn't get beyond pleasantries and asking for easy directions. But I just got here so I hope to improve a lot if I am able.

hey!! i went to school "full-time", which actually meant like a 4 hour day, 5 days a week, so you can actually attend japanese school and work at the same time. most of the teachers i met there were extremely kind and funny. many of their students are from taiwan and korea, but i'm sure you'd blend right in!! http://www.incul.com/eng/index.html

let me know if you need to contact any staff, i know some who are extremely helpful!

Hi! I found your site from galadarling, it's really cool!

I studied Japanese through high school, and then majored in it at university, so maybe my experience is a little different from yours, but I hope it helps anyway :) I found a language exchange partner really useful when I was living in Japan, you learn real conversational Japanese that you will use so often it just sticks. I'm not saying it's better than lessons, but it is a way of learning a bit extra that's fun and makes new friends!

I have been studying at ARC Academy (Shinjuku) for the past few months and they keep changing my teachers. One of them I got along with very well and conversation practice was great (like chatting to a good friend) but now she is being transferred to another branch, so I am pretty miffed.

Therefore, I have been looking for another school and found one in Iidabashi (Iidabashi Japanese School), hence, how I found your site. I will probably have trial lesson with them soon.

It would be great to know what the school that you had a trial in Iidabashi was like.

Hi - I found your site when searching for Japanese language school information. Have you found any good schools since your post 3 years ago? I am considering ARC, ISIE, KAI and Naganuma.

When are you headed to Japan? I'm going in a week!!
