Top Ten Japanese Baby Names

When I was about twelve years old, I used to look through this book my mother had called "The Stork's Guide to Naming Your Baby". At any rate, I think that was what it was called. It was blue with a bunch of stork pictures all over the cover. Anyway, there was a section in it that showed the top ten names for babies in thirty different countries. That was my favorite section and I used to look through it imagining what my name could have been if I'd been born elsewhere. I like my name now, and I don't plan on having any babies for a long, long, long time but I still enjoy looking at the top baby names in places I visit. Here are the top ten baby names for Japanese babies this year.

My Three Answers
1. My name is Julie.

2. I like my name a lot. I like it because it's not so common that I hear people calling it all the time, but it's also not so uncommon that it's eccentric or gets double-takes and misspellings.

3. If I had a child I have no idea what I'd call it, but it would have to be something short and easy to pronounce in almost any language. I think that's an advantage when you travel.

1. My name is Emily

2. When I'm older I will change my name to the name I give to everybody which is JJ. I hate having my name, because there are millions and millions of people that have it and to me, JJ suits my personality!!!

3. I have alot but I'll cut it down a bit.
Boys: Kai, Dieygo, Luka, Dherun, Frankie
Girls: Autumn, Kitarnie, Ailani, Frankee, Kiora, Kalani.

I am a little late on commenting but stumbled across your blog linked from deanne at sushizume...

My name is Laura...although my family calls me lulu (any anybody that knew me before I was 10 does the same)

I like my name in most cases. I love having name discussions though. When I was little I liked the name Emily and wished I had been called that instead. I hate my middle name.

If I had children with my current partner their names would have to be short and easy to pronouce probably. But I like some long names also.

Girl: emily (emiri) mie, mia, maya, mika, yuri, olivia and kaiya

boy: kai, jack, hiro, shion, shota,

That is just some of the names i lik!

Sorry for the lateness here. I discovered this amazing blog through the link on Venuszine (my favorite). Anyways:

1. My actual name is Kymberlee, however, I go by Kym (or "The Wizard" if you knew me in high school).

2. I have always despised my name. Especially the fact that my parents thought they were being cute by giving me a cliche suburban bourgeoisie name with a "unique" spelling that I'm convinced no one will ever spell correctly. In addition, it has never been suitable for my personality, I have always feminist, vegetairian, hippie - punk, not the subversive, airheded, girl next door everyone assumes a "Kimberly" should be.

3. As inconceivable as it is, if husband and I should ever create progeny I would assume, given our lifestyle they would grow up to be more than just a litle "quirky". So, I think their names should follow suit.

Girl: Della is my absolute favorite for a female. Burgundy,Iona,Zinnia

Boy: Draelen is my favorite for a male. Ashby,Hezekiah,Xavier

I'm not too concerned with making it simple for the sake of travel because I think these names are unique enough to be remembered easily. Also I intend to spell them as is, because I'm fairly certain kids with these names won't have to deal with degrading things like "oh there's kim with a 'y' and too 'e's!" like I have.

Hey Kym! Thanks for writing. I was so stoked to have this site in Venuszine, too. It's a great site and a lot of really rad people have found me through it.

I used to like the idea of giving my child a really unique, offbeat name. But now I think I'd rather give it a plain, old-fashioned name and maybe a more interesting middle name. I have always liked how my name is common enough that everyone knows how to spell it, yet not so common that it's Jessica or Ashley and everyone has that name.

Out of your names, Della is pretty. Not crazy about Xavier, though Ashby is pretty great.

For Japanese names, my favorite boy names are Naoki and anything ending in "suke" (pronounced su-kay) like Yusuke or Ryosuke. My favorite student in Tokyo was named Shirabe and that's actually a really eccentric name in Japan... it's a verb and it's not common at all. It means "research" but I think it's a great name. For girls, I like Haruka and Ayaka.

Interesting topic.

I'm Tammy and over the years the name kinda "grew on me". I was named for a girl in a movie my Mom saw.
When I was little I wanted to be Jenny, or Karen, or Kami, or something common like that, but then I figured, my parents gave me my name for a reason and it's mine, so I am keeping it, besides, it's easy to pronounce in any languge.
I like solid, popular names and I really don't like exhotic or trendy type names.
My baby daughter is Emily and if she'll have a sister or brother, they will be Natalie and Shaun.

1. My name's Harriet :)
I didn't used to like my name and wanted to change it, but now I'm pretty happy with it. I don't think any other name really suits me.

3. Girls: Sadie
Boys: Isaac, Hamish

kida said...

1. My name is Keianna.

2. I love my first name a lot, even though it's frequently said wrong most of the time. I even have a second name which is even harder to say! (Synique) Both are totally unique in spelling and pronunciation!

3. If I were to have a child, I would want it to be as unique as mine. For a girl I would name her Kida or Renee and then for a boy, something along the lines of Yoru or Masih (spelling may vary for Masih)

I know I'm late to post, but I like name games and I'll probably be on your site a lot for the next 4 years as I try to get where you are now. ^_^

1. My name is Logan.

2. Logan has always seemed strong and a loner. So it fits me too much to change it.

3. If I have a boy I think I would want to name him Issac. I've always loved this name because it's strong like "Logan", but seems much warmer; more friendly. For a girl... I like Keiko and Haruko. Esspecially Haruko cause it sounds very friendly. ^_^

3. Girls. Rowan, Alexa, Kit, Hana
Boys. Raven, John(Family Tradition), Dylan, Ricky

Just wanted to let you know how helpful this was. I found you by googling Japanese names. I am weeks away from having my 3rd child, and am stuck on boys names. My husband is from Japan and always roots for the 3 syllable name that will get mutilated in the US. Our first two, are Bonji and Seiji and I love them and their names. If I have another boy, he may be Shirabe. Thanks!

signed: Sara (like my name now, and am most grateful these days there is no "h" on the end)

Just to let you know that if you name your child Shirabe and you don't live in Japan, his name will be forever mispronounced as rhyming with the first syllable in "table"...one syllable Shirabe is not as lovely as the Japanese pronunciation. Just a heads up!

1. My name is Amie

2. I love my name because its not something you hear very often and it just fits me. I find it sorta strange that my parents named me "Amy" with an "ie" instead of a "y".

3. if I and my partner were to have kids, I think they would have to be "unique" such as:

girls: Kimberly, Callandra, Keiara,
Boys: Nathaniel, Vincent, Daniel

Anne-Cécile said...

1. My name is Anne-Cécile.

2. I used to hate my name because no one remembers it, even in France where I live. It is long and complicated, but the older I get the more I like it. It is my parents' definition of the perfect name.

3. I would call my daughter Helena, for I have been fond of this name for so long now. And my son Nathan.

1. My name is heather

2. i like it cuz im the only heather at school but I would change it to alex

3 daughter- alex sakura nami yuki christina son- dylan kai rio

nona said...

1.My name is Alina.

2. I don't like my name and it doesn't suits me, it is in romanian and it means to " to soothe" or "to comfort"... I'm more a caustic person, I usually hurt people around, even without knowing.
It's like I'm the opposite of my name, so, I would change my name in Nona...for me it means Non-Alina, and in latin it means the ninth, in romanian it is a sickness due to oversleeping (or something like that), thing that is very common to me -I always get late to my morning school hours-.
Also in the ancient Rome, it was the ninth hour of the day and also there was a pray named Nona, which was been said in the same hour, the ninth hour of the day.
In music it is an interval between two sounds of the diatonic gamut.
And there are many other meanings of this name.. so .. mostly I will choose this one, more because of his meanings, that i think that represent my strange personality and complex structure of any humans way of thinking.
And second because I think a name must represent his owner and that changing him according the owner's type is not a disgrace to the parents.

For babies the names i like are:

Agu it means Leopard and it's African.
Akio -Bright or smart- Japanese
Aki - Sky - Japanese
Adan -of the earth- Spanish
Lucas -light- Latin
Sebastian - Venerable - Latin
Adonis -Beautiful- Greek

I did not put them by gender because I think a name should be given more be looks and the feeling that the baby leaves to there parents on there first meeting, then by the gender.

WakyJaky said...

1. My name is Jaky (Jacqueline)

2. I like my nick-name more than my full name because i've never met or heard of one period who spells it the same. There are so many different spellings and i don't think my name is really really common so i feel different. I think my name is really funny and specially because my mom named me after her high-schools most popular girl.

3. Im not having kids for a long time but my boyfriend and I want to name our son Roku and if we have a daughter we want to name her Yukiko. My boyfriend i Japanese and we're planning to move to Japan before we have a child so it makes sense that we want him or her to have a name that the other children can pronounce

Saoirse said...

1. My name is Saoirse - pronounced seersha.

2. I hated my name for so long but wouldn't change it now for the world, although I now answer to the many versions of my name which I've acquired through travelling. It means freedom in Irish Gaelic, and was pretty unique when I was young though it's becoming more popular in Ireland these days.

Abroad, I answer to sushi, sasha, sercy, saucy (if you try to read my name it sounds like sayorsee), whatevers easiest for others - currently susha-sen :) Sometimes I change it to the native version of freedom if thats easy - liberte in France.

I have a Danish surname, and like that my name represents my two halves - my two nationalities.

3. I don't know about children, but I love my friends names - Jonna and Grainne and Siofra(girls) and Kristian and Robin and Jascha(boys).
