Tokyo train station music box

At almost every train station in Tokyo, when a train opens its doors, a little song that sounds like a music box plays. I think the train station music is a really distinctive thing that makes traveling in Tokyo different from traveling anywhere else. The Japanese train station music is really cute and charming. I like it because it sounds adorable and it reminds you that you're living somewhere else. It plays a different song at every stop.

My cousin told me that the Tokyo train station music used to play the same song for every stop, but that they switched it up because it was making people depressed. I really like the music, but I could see why a nostalgic, child-like music box sound could make lonely people even more aware of their loneliness. Some people told me that the police found a few suicides where a cd of the train station music was playing on repeat next to the body. Very sad. I hope it's just an urban legend my cousin had heard, because I can't find any news sources to verify it online.

The train station music box music is really adorable and a distinct part of traveling or living in Tokyo. There are a bunch of sites where you can listen to all the songs, and I've linked to some of those sites in this post.
