Tokyo girls and Tokyo fish

I saw this awkward display in Ueno park (past the zoo, down the stairs) and it made me laugh. It was just three young girls sitting in front of this makeshift tank full of goldfish. Some dead, some dying, some healthy. People were scooping goldfish into baggies with shovels. I wondered what was going on.

This British man came and asked the girls in Japanese if they were playing a game to win goldfish, like in a fair or a carinival. The girls laughed and explained that they were just there to sell the fish. They told him that they came to the park all the time to sell fish and did really well. He translated it for me. The money goes to their high school track team. Neat pictures, hmm? I love the color of these fish and their patterns are nice, too.

Also, check out the thigh-high stockings on these cute-but-also hot Tokyo girls. I think the real 'look' girls are going for in Tokyo is this "unintentionally sexy" look. Tokyo girls must know that if they're wearing thigh-high socks and little skirts, they'll probably look sexually attractive, but the way that they act in these outfits is really sweet and never seems like they're trying too hard.

If you want to see "trying too hard" in Tokyo, go to Roppongi or any busy district at night where girls are heading to clubs. There is this one type of girl with heavily fake-tanned, orange skin, loads of makeup, microminis and reddish hair piled up on the head. I don't know if this style has a name, but I saw about eleven girls dressed like this in one night.

It sounds like that "over the top" style you're describing is ganguro.

Whoa, that's exactly what those girls I saw looked like. Thanks for giving me this name! Ahh, that's so interesting that it became popular. I think it's such a bad look!! Some website I read called it "California girl meets blackface" and said that it became popular because of girls wanting to imitate Janet jackson?? Check out this page:

or just try image searching the word Ganguro. god...

Yeh I saw alot of girls last month in Shibuya like that. No offense intended but it looks horrible. One had her skin so dark it reminded me of the umpa-lumpa men in the original Charlie and the chocolate factory. Scaaarrryy!
